Wikipedia has an entry on Solipsism, as you would expect. Some wikipedia articles have been clearly edited by folks of different opinions, often giving one statement followed directly by a contradiction, or someone getting "the last word" in.

"Philosophical solipsism as pathological

Solipsism is often introduced (for example "Philosophy made simple", by Popkin and Stroll) as a bankrupt philosophy, or at best bizarre and unlikely. Alternatively, the philosophy is introduced in the context of relating it to pathological psychological conditions. However, solipsists believe that the philosophy of solipsism is neither bankrupt, bizarre, strange, nor pathological."

Upon reading this, I thought to myself... wait, there are *solipsists*? Seriously? There are people who believe that nothing exists except their own consciousness? How would you pal around with fellow solipsists? NONE OF YOU BELIEVE THE OTHERS EXIST

Anyway, I got a kick out of that.

A lot of kids had imaginary friends. What's wrong with believing other people don't exist but creating an imaginary friend to help pass the time?

My conundrum with this 'philosophy' arises when I consider things like foreign language. My foreign language skills are very rudimentary. Is it then plausible to suppose that my mind has fabricated a form of communication which itself it cannot comprehend? ie. If I were to subscribe to solipsism, then the entire Russian language - or at least, the parts of it which I have 'observed' - are a creation of my mind. Yet this same mind cannot comprehend its own creation? That's just too much of a paradox for my limited intellect to surmount.

I think a solipsist would assign Russian the same meaning as barks of dogs- it has no meaning, it's background noise put on by the mindless zombies.

If you subsequently learned the language, it would be yet another way to record information. It's still background noise put on by the mindless zombies of course- nothing another person ever says is anything but a text bubble from an NPC in a video game after all- but at least now you can understand what meaning they are supposedly imparting.

As far as communication goes, I don't think that exists as a concept for the solipsist.
