I mean, if your goal is to grant America a clear goal and a villain to punch, in what universe is that a great strategy? All the fiction we consume is
exactly that story, we know what to do there starting at about age 5. ISIS exists because they stepped in the middle of a silent seething mini cold war and started taking territory. The only folks who have the will and the need to fight them hard are like the Kurds, and they are doing that (with IMO shamefully little help from us), while all the big powers sit around and point fingers at each other or make statements about who should and shouldn't be doing which thing to which bad people.
